Good Day to Remember that Freedom Isn't Free - Memorial Day Salute 2014

To all service members in all branches of our U.S. armed forces, we thank you for your courage, your strength, and your sacrifices.

I would like to take a moment to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of our U.S. military servicemen and women.
I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of images on the internet stating “Memorial Day is not another BBQ“.  Let’s take that to heart.  Many men and women have made great sacrifices to ensure our freedom.  They have been uncomfortable so we can be comfortable.  They have endured sleepless nights, no food, little shelter, and risk daily danger to their lives so we can be safe.  Some have made the ultimate sacrifice by saving their friends and fighting for our country.  “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13

It is because of our military service men and women, we continue to be a free country.  It is because of them that our original Declaration of Independence rings clear today.  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Declaration of Independence

I challenge you to not let Memorial Day be just a day for family picnics, and reunions, but a day to remember those who serve, who have served, and who have given the ultimate sacrifice.  Take the time to reach out to families who have lost their loved one, and to our vulnerable veterans, the homeless, those hospitalized at the VA, and those returning from deployment.  Spend a few minutes with them and give them the gift of your time.  Take the time to thank a soldier in uniform or someone you know who has served.

Let us always remember the debt we owe to those who have died for our freedom, and to those who continue to risk their lives each and everyday.
